Call for Postdoctoral Fellowship to Lead a Research Project on Emergency Preparedness and Response

We offer a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to lead a research project on emergency preparedness and response. This project will examine various emergency response systems worldwide, with a focus on civilian aspects, including the stages from emergency preparedness scenarios and plans to the actual handling of crisis/emergency/disaster situations both in the past and present, as well as the establishment of organizational processes and relevant legal infrastructure, all while considering the relevance of the research to the Israeli context.

The Center is particularly interested in researchers with proven research capabilities and relevant professional backgrounds in the fields of security, emergency management, civil society in Israel and/or other countries, and those capable of promoting collaboration between the academic and practical spheres in this field.

In addition to their personal research, the applicant must demonstrate the ability to integrate into an interdisciplinary research group. The research group will consist of leading researchers in the field, together with professional experts and relevant stakeholders outside academia.

Selected candidates will receive a postdoctoral fellowship of 90,000 NIS per year (for two years), and the research period will begin in the second semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and end at the conclusion of the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Doctoral Studies

Call for Doctoral Fellowships in the Field of Emergency Preparedness and Response

 

We offer a fellowship for doctoral students whose dissertation topic is related to emergency preparedness and response, with an emphasis on the relevance of the research to the Israeli context and/or international comparative research.

In addition to their personal research, doctoral students are required to actively participate in the research group operating at the James J. Shasha Center in areas related to the Center's interests, alongside other research students, professional experts, and relevant stakeholders.

Eligible candidates include students from the Hebrew University, or students from other higher education institutions in Israel who have been accepted to doctoral studies at the Hebrew University by July 2025 (and have secured a supervisor).

Successful candidates will receive a fellowship of 25,000 NIS per year (with the possibility of an extension for an additional year, subject to satisfactory progress in the research). Additionally, as determined by the Center's academic committee, there may be an option to grant an additional research grant that the fellow can use for research expenses, conference travel, etc. Funding may begin in the second semester of the academic year 2024-2025 or the first semester of the academic year 2025-2026.

MA thesis

Call for Proposals for a Master's Research Fellowship in the Emerging Regional Arena

 

Policy research focused on the emerging regional arena in the Middle East, with an emphasis (but not limited to) on the intersection of security, economy, politics, religion, cultural identity, climate, and population, in relation to developments in energy, infrastructure, and innovative technologies (including traditional technologies, breakthrough technologies, and disruptive technologies), is being advanced by the James J. Shasha Center for Strategic Studies at the Hebrew University. The research will address the long-term implications and effects on Israel's policy, both in the lead-up to and following the potential establishment of new international arrangements in the Middle East.

The fellowship is intended for a Master's degree student from the Hebrew University only, enrolled in a research track, whose thesis topic is related to the emerging regional policy.

Successful candidates will receive a fellowship of 8,000 NIS per year (with the possibility of an extension for an additional year, subject to satisfactory progress in research).

We offer a fellowship for a Master's thesis related to emergency preparedness and response. This includes examining Israel's emergency system with an emphasis on its various civilian aspects, covering different stages from preparedness scenarios and plans to actual responses to past and present crises/emergencies, as well as ongoing issues related to rehabilitation and the institutionalization of processes, organizations, and relevant legal infrastructure, all within an international comparative context.

The fellowship is intended for Master's degree students from the Hebrew University only, enrolled in the research track, whose thesis topic is related to emergency preparedness in Israel and/or globally and the response to such situations.

Selected candidates will receive a fellowship of 8,000 NIS per year (with the possibility of an extension for an additional year, subject to satisfactory progress in research).
